Ex-Barcelona Star Announces Decision to Represent Morocco Instead of Spain

Ilias Akhomach’s decision to represent Morocco at the senior international level is a bold and commendable move. Despite playing for Spain at five underage levels, his desire to switch allegiance shows his commitment to his heritage. His talent and potential will undoubtedly benefit the Moroccan national team, and I look forward to seeing him shine on the international stage.

The former Barcelona player Ilias Akhomach has officially announced his intention to represent Morocco at the senior international level. Akhomach, who was considered a potential star in Catalonia, made his debut in Xavi’s first game in charge in November 2021. However, his opportunities with the first team quickly diminished. After 11 years at Barcelona, including two stints in their La Masia academy, the 19-year-old chose not to renew his contract at the end of last season. Instead, he joined Villarreal on a free transfer and has played a rotational role for the team so far in the 2023/24 season. Despite representing Spain at five underage levels, Akhomach has decided to switch his international allegiance to Morocco. Spain U21 head coach Santi Denia confirmed Akhomach’s decision to change international allegiance as part of his squad announcement for their upcoming matches. Spain U21 has won all three of their 2025 UEFA U21 European Championship qualifiers, and they are set to face Hungary and Belgium this month.
