The interruption, which occurred during the broadcast from a concert hall in Hamburg, was in competition with the team names being read out on stage. UEFA and the BBC have both experienced similar incidents with the same prankster before. This article explores the details of the incident and the impact of the prank on the draw ceremony.
Euro 2024 Draw Ceremony Marred by Unexplained Noises
The draw ceremony for the European Championship was disrupted by unexplained moaning noises on Saturday, as teams were being drawn for the upcoming tournament. The interruption, which seemed to resemble sexual noises, was heard for several minutes during the ceremony broadcast from a concert hall in Hamburg.
A British prankster claimed credit for the stunt on social media, posting footage of himself making cell phone calls to activate a ring tone in the venue with excellent acoustics. The UEFA director of competitions noted the noise in his commentary before continuing with the draw for the last six places for lower-ranked teams in the 24-nation tournament lineup.
This isn’t the first time the prankster has caused disruptions at sporting events. He was previously banned from all sporting events in England and Wales for two years after an incident at a cricket match in 2021.
Euro 2024 will be staged between 10 German cities from June 14 to July 14, with the final taking place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
