Tottenham Hotspur: A Brief History
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly known as Tottenham or Spurs, is a professional football club based in Tottenham, London, England. The club was founded in 1882 by a group of schoolboys from Saint John’s Middle Class School and Tottenham Grammar School, the club was initially named Hotspur Football Club, but it was later renamed Tottenham Hotspur Football Club to avoid confusion with an older club named Hotspur FC.
Club’s History
Tottenham played in the Southern League from 1896 until 1908, when they were elected to the Football League Second Division, they won promotion to the First Division the following year and stayed there until the late 1920s, the club played mostly in the Second Division until the 1950s, when it enjoyed a revival, reaching a peak in the 1960s, fortunes dipped after the early 1970s, but resurged in the 1980s. Tottenham was a founding member of the Premier League in 1992.
Championships
Tottenham Hotspur has a long history of cup success, winning eight FA Cups, four League Cups, one Cup Winners’ Cup, and two UEFA Cups, the team was the first British team to win a European trophy, as well as winning the first UEFA Cup ever organized.
Tottenham were the first club in the 20th century to achieve the League and FA Cup Double, winning both competitions in the 1960–61 season, the team won its first top-division league championship in 1950–51 and its second in 1960–61.

Tottenham Hotspur has had many great players throughout its history, some of the most prominent players include Jimmy Greaves, who is the club’s all-time leading scorer with 266 goals, Glenn Hoddle, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest English midfielders of all time, and Gareth Bale, who helped the team win two UEFA Cups and scored a memorable hat-trick against Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Tottenham Hotspur played its home matches at White Hart Lane from 1899 until 2017, the stadium had a capacity of 36,284. In April 2019, the team moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has a capacity of 62,850, the stadium was built on the same site as White Hart Lane and cost approximately £1 billion to build.
Club’s Logo
Tottenham Hotspur’s emblem is a cockerel standing upon a football, with the Latin motto “Audere est Facere” (“to dare is to do”), the club has traditionally worn white shirts and navy blue shorts as their home kit since the 1898–99 season, the characteristic rooster has always been in Tottenham Hotspur’s logo. When the logo was redesigned in 1956, more elements were added to it, but the current logo that was adopted in 2006 restored the simplistic design approach and is quite similar to the original logo.
