WWest Ham United Football Club is a professional football club based in Stratford, East London. The club was founded in 1895 as the Thames Railway, and is based in the Upton Park area of east London. The club is nicknamed “the Hammers” and “the Irons” because it originated near a London ironworks.

History

West Ham United Football Club is a professional football club based in Stratford, East London, the club was founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks and reformed in 1900 as West Ham United, the team initially competed in the Southern League and Western League before joining the Football League in 1919, it was promoted to the top flight in 1923, when it was also losing finalists in the first FA Cup final held at Wembley.

Championships

West Ham United has won five major honors in its history. Domestically, it has been winners of the FA Cup three times (1964, 1975, and 1980) and runners-up twice (1923 and 2006).

In European competitions, the club has reached three major European finals, winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965, finishing runners-up in the same competition in 1976, and winning the second edition of the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Prominent Players

West Ham United has had many great players throughout its history, some of the most prominent players include:

Bobby Moore: The captain of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team, Moore played for West Ham for 16 years and is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time.
Geoff Hurst: Hurst scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final and also played for West Ham United for 16 years.
Paolo Di Canio: The Italian forward played for WestHam United from 1999 to 2003 and is remembered for his spectacular goals and passionate celebrations.

Stadium

West Ham played at the Boleyn Ground, also known as Upton Park, from 1904 to 2016, the club moved to the London Stadium, which was built for the 2012 Olympics, in 2016, the stadium has a capacity of 60,000 and is located in Stratford, East London.

West Ham United’s logo features a pair of crossed rivet hammers, which is part of the club’s heritage as a workers’ team, the current logo was unveiled in 1999 and features only one hammer but still includes all three heraldic symbols on its shield along with “United”.
