Brazilian doctor confirms Neymar will miss 2024 Copa América in the U.S.
The 2024 Copa América in the United States will be missing one of its star players as Brazil forward Neymar has been ruled out due to a serious knee injury. Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar provided an update, explaining that the 31-year-old is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee. This unfortunate development will keep Neymar off the pitch as he focuses on his rehabilitation, with hopes of returning to action for the 2024 season in Europe. In the meantime, Brazil will have to adjust their lineup for the tournament which kicks off on June 20.
Brazil’s star forward Neymar ruled out of 2024 Copa América due to knee injury
Brazil’s top scorer Neymar will miss the 2024 Copa América in the United States due to a serious knee injury suffered in October, Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed. The Al Hilal player, 31, tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his left knee during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay. Neymar underwent surgery two weeks later and is expected to return to action at the start of the 2024 season in Europe.
Neymar’s absence will be a significant blow to Brazil, as he is their all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 129 appearances. The team has been drawn into Group D of next year’s Copa América, alongside Colombia, Paraguay, and the winner of a playoff between Costa Rica and Honduras.
In the lead-up to the tournament, Brazil is set to face Mexico in a pre-tournament friendly on June 8. The Copa América will feature 10 teams from South America and six teams from Concacaf.
After making a high-profile move from Paris Saint-Germain to Al Hilal in August, Neymar will spend an extended period on the sidelines, with a focus on recovering and returning to top form following his injury.
