Luxury San Sebastian villa of Xabi Alonso to be demolished after being declared illegal

Introduction to the article:
Former professional footballer Xabi Alonso has been ordered to demolish his luxury villa in San Sebastian after it was declared illegal due to not complying with environmental guidelines. The court’s decision comes after a legal battle with environment and cultural groups contesting the building permit.

The Ruling

A Spanish court has ruled Xabi Alonso’s San Sebastian villa to be illegal, as it does not comply with environmental guidelines. Despite being granted a license to build on the site in 2018, a legal challenge argued that the building permit was illegal because it was located on undevelopable agricultural land.

Environmental Concerns

Environment group Haritzalde and cultural group Ieltxo, along with two neighbourhood groups, filed a complaint contesting construction on the site and asked for the chalet to be demolished. The challenge argued the building does not comply with the obligation to maintain the rural typology and the reconstruction of the original hamlet.

Legal Battle

Alonso reportedly has the right to appeal the decision, as the property, which has 406.8 square meters of living space and no basement, was granted permission to build a 1,145 square meter house with a basement before the ruling.

Outcome

Following the legal battle, Haritzalde announced the result was “favourable” to them, as the court ruled the building of a roof on the chalet to be illegal. This decision comes after Alonso’s acquittal on three counts of tax fraud by Spain’s Supreme Court.
