Arsenal Legend Gilberto Silva Takes Stand Against Cyber Abuse
Former Arsenal player and Brazilian World Cup winner Gilberto Silva is leading the charge against cyber abuse in football. The Gunners icon revealed his own struggles with online hatred and threats, which even led to him being too scared to leave his house at one point. His experiences inspired him to launch Striver, a social media platform powered by AI to combat hate speech and abuse.
Gilberto’s own encounters with racism and sickening abuse during his playing career have fueled his mission to make a change. His platform has already garnered support from Manchester United star Harry Maguire, who has been a target of online abuse himself. Gilberto has also made it his aim to support current players, such as the Brazilian trio at Arsenal, in dealing with cyber abuse.
The former midfielder believes that footballers are facing more abuse than ever, with a study showing over 300 abusive messages sent to Premier League players every day. The Striver platform, co-founded by Gilberto and businessman Tim Chase, offers a safe space for footballers to interact with fans without fear of abuse. Joined by fellow football legends such as Sol Campbell and Roberto Carlos, Gilberto is determined to bring about a positive change and support players in facing cyber abuse.
