Ex-President of Real Betis Hospitalized in Intensive Care After Intestinal Issue
Introduction
Former Real Betis President Manuel Ruiz de Lopera has been taken into intensive care after experiencing a recurrence of a health issue.
Health Problems
Ruiz de Lopera, 79, is currently in hospital after complaining of pain in his gut, which turned out to be a recurrence of a previous issue by the name of diverticulosis. This has caused inflammation and potentially internal bleeding, leading to his admission to the intensive care unit.
Controversial Leadership
In charge of Betis for a decade between 1996 and 2006, Ruiz de Lopera oversaw the team’s success in getting into the Champions League and winning a Copa del Rey. However, his leadership was also marked by controversy, with fans protesting his management as he plunged the team into financial problems, leading to their relegation shortly after.
Legacy
During his tenure, Ruiz de Lopera also made significant contributions to the team, including competing with the top names in football for major transfers and breaking the world record to sign Denilson. Additionally, the Benito Villamarin stadium was named after him between 1997 and 2010, although it was a decision he made himself.
