Real Madrid players on the mend, but return dates still uncertain
Real Madrid’s Misfortune: Courtois and Militao Making Progress in ACL Injury Recoveries
Positive Progress for Courtois
Despite their recent misfortune with three players suffering anterior cruciate ligament injuries, Real Madrid have received some positive news regarding the recoveries of Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao. Both players are back training on the grass after completing the purely gym-based phase of their recovery. Courtois has shared videos of himself training outside, while Militao has been doing light exercises with the ball. However, Courtois has acknowledged that he will likely not be 100% for the Euros this summer and is unlikely to play for Belgium.
Uncertain Timeline for Returns
Real Madrid have not changed the schedule for the return of Courtois and Militao, despite their positive progress. Courtois is expected to come back in May and has accepted that he won’t be fully fit for the Euros. Meanwhile, Militao’s return is anticipated in late March or April. With only Nacho Fernandez and Antonio Rudiger as natural options at central defender, manager Carlo Ancelotti has stated that they will not be signing another central defender this January. However, the medical staff at Valdebebas have cautioned that a tough road to recovery lies ahead for both players.
Options for Cover in Defence
Ancelotti has suggested that Aurelien Tchouameni, Ferland Mendy, and Dani Carvajal could provide cover in central defence. However, Tchouameni may need time to adapt to the position, and moving either of the full-backs into the middle could weaken the team in their respective positions. With this in mind, the return of Militao could prove to be invaluable for Real Madrid down the stretch.
